“He was playful, curious and friendly,” Amy told us today show host Laura Jarrett and Peter Alexander On Monday, January 19, a rare insight into Robert as a parent was shared. “I think what he taught us to do is really find what we’re most passionate about and what we think might be able to change the world.”
Amy, 55, continued, “I think the best thing he did for my family was raise us between New York City and the Sundance Mountains — because we had to live between cities and obey the laws of nature — and teach us a very strong stewardship value. I think that’s something that we all still talk about to this day, and I’m very proud of that.”
Robert shared four children with his first wife, the historian Lora Van Wogen: Son Scott, who died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in 1959, James, who died of cancer in 2020 aged 58, and daughters Shawna, 65, and Amy. This year’s Sundance Film Festival honors Robert, who co-founded the festival in 1978 to showcase independent filmmakers. This will be the first Sundance Film Festival since sting Starr died in his sleep at home in September 2025 at the age of 89.
Amy noted in Monday’s interview that her father had said he was advised not to host the festival, but ultimately chose not to listen to the naysayers.
“If you tell him not to do it, that means it’s not done yet,” she said. “He decided, ‘Okay, I have some platform, and I’m going to use it to change the world.'” I think knowing that there are so many stories that need to be told, and there are so many stories that haven’t been told, and there are so many amazing storytellers that haven’t been seen yet, that was really his most fundamental motivation. “

Amy, like her late father, was an actor and director. She said Robert never wanted to leave his mark on the world.
“He’s not a person to be wary of,” she explained. “I think his legacy is really about dedication, and I think he was able to do things like create the Redford Center with my late brother Jamie Redford, to be able to know that every artist that came out of the Sundance Institute might one day be in the public domain, like Ryan Coogler and Zhao Ting and all those who came to celebrate the organization’s continued progress. “
The 2026 Sundance Film Festival will be held from January 22 to February 1 in Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah.
