A man considered one of Rhode Island’s “most wanted” fugitives has been arrested in Guatemala more than eight years after he allegedly murdered a 22-year-old man and fled the United States, according to authorities.
John Nunez was on the run Since July 1, 2017, authorities say he killed the 22-year-old Devin Burney. Burney has been wanted by the Providence Police Department since his death.
Nunez, 36, was charged fatal shot According to police, Bernie, 22, was walking to his car after visiting a local lounge in Providence with a group of friends when he providence magazine the report said. Investigators initially suspected someone shot Burney from a nearby car.
After Burney’s death, Nunez allegedly obtained a false ID, left the United States, and ended up in Guatemala, where he has been living under a false name, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
The U.S. Marshals Service announced in a press release on Wednesday, March 25, that Nunez was arrested in Guatemala on Tuesday, March 24.
It was unclear whether Nunez had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.
More than a year ago, authorities learned Nunez might be living in Guatemala and then eventually confirmed his whereabouts. Law enforcement did not specify where he was in the country.
“This arrest is the result of years of tireless work and unwavering commitment from our detectives and law enforcement partners,” said Providence Police Chief. Oscar Perez said in a statement. “For more than eight years, our investigators have never lost their focus on seeking justice for Devin Burney and his loved ones. Today’s arrest demonstrates that no matter how much time passes or how far someone tries to escape, we will continue to pursue the truth and hold those responsible accountable.”
Bernie was born in Providence and later moved to Shirley, Long Island, New York, where he attended William Floyd High School and was known as a star basketball player, according to his online account obituary.
After graduating from high school, Bernie returned to Providence to attend college at Johnson & Wales University, his obituary said. There he was studying business management.
“Devin was an amazing young man and sports scholar,” Burney’s obituary read in part. “Devin aspires to be an entrepreneur in sports management, which is his true passion.”
“Devin will be deeply missed and cherished by all who knew him,” his obituary concluded. “His infectious smile and sense of humor will forever live in our hearts”
Nunez is currently being held in Guatemala awaiting extradition to the United States, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Authorities said he will face criminal charges in connection with Bernie’s death in Rhode Island.
