She claimed the video was stolen and “manipulated” and vowed to release the original video on Friday, February 13. (us weekly HGTV has been contacted for comment on Curtis’ claims. )
“This is not a post I thought I would write, I’ve drafted it countless times but nothing seems to be enough,” Curtis began.
She continued, “There’s anger, there’s hatred, there’s pain. I’m here to accept it. I’m not hiding, ignoring, waiting for this to pass. I’m just playing this over and over again, watching the videos, and saying the right things and doing the right things together after making the worst mistakes.”
“I am so sorry. I am filled with remorse and regret just as I was a second after I said these words 4 years ago in 2022,” Curtis wrote. “I show this, I say this, and I realize your perspective is limited because what’s circulating is a video clip of me that was stolen and then manipulated, edited and sold to (a) tabloid to coincide with my return to television, only to create this mess of hatred, anger and disappointment.”
Curtis said she had “no excuses” for the language in the video, writing, “I am not a victim. Nothing I can say or do can take away that moment four years ago. I know it was wrong. It will never happen again.”
“I want to be clear on this…I’m not raising this issue because I was ‘caught’. I’m here because I’m not happy with the facts that I’ve been told,” she continued. “I have been immersed in the African American community my entire adult life. I am a mom of two and I have chosen to live and work in the inner cities of many large cities, but most notably Minneapolis and Detroit. Yes, I hear this term every day, people It’s said all around me, I hear it in music, I’m not reclusive in the suburbs, I’m a neighborhood white, little blonde, and I know it’s a word that represents evil, pain, suffering, trauma when used by people like me, and yet, it comes from me…”
Curtis went on to explain her inflammatory language in the video, in which she can be heard saying “fart (the N-word)” while appearing to struggle with some of the renovation work.
“You ask – how did this come out so easily. I have no answer for that. It does, and it blows my mind, as pictured. Now, you ask – what the hell are you talking about? I pieced together the words that were documented in 15 years of TV, interviews, posts, these random words,” she wrote. “The most famous ‘Son of the Hive Digger’ replaced SOB, and when I became a mom,[couldn’t]say bad words on TV. In recent years, I’ve added Fart Digger, Fart Knocker. That’s on record.”
Curtis continued her statement in the comments section of the post, writing about the impact the controversy has had on her children.
“I let down a lot of people, including my children, who I had to tell. My youngest said ‘don’t you say that word,’ and I had to say (I) said it,” she wrote.
Curtis said she would release “raw footage” of the moment on Friday, writing that she had made a “mistake that I immediately recognized and went into panic.”
“I’m not afraid that this will ruin my career, no, I’m afraid that I’m putting this horrible word into the universe,” she said. “That was all my footage, my cameras, my house – not for HGTV, not for the show, no one was going to see that footage – I just didn’t want it to be there because it was a moment of deep regret and shame. There was no fear of the network, etc. I don’t want to hear me say that again – it’s that simple.”
“HGTV had no idea because it was filmed on my own time, completion and equipment. No one knew except the people in that room,” Curtis claimed. “No one has these tapes except me and my ex-boyfriend.”
Curtis ended her post by again apologizing for using the racial slur, noting that she made the statement “without a PR firm” and “against the advice of most people.”
“I’m sorry and I understand the hurt and anger,” she added.
