Rebecca Gayhart Supporting Eric Dane Despite their separation, his health continued to fail.
Gayheart, 54, is teaching daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, that “we are here to serve people no matter what,” while Dane, 53, is coping with the new normal of ALS.
“He’s our family. He’s your dad,” Gayheart said on the Monday, Nov. 17 episode. “Broad Thoughts” Podcast. “We showed up, we tried to do it with some dignity and some grace and we got through it.”
Gerhart admitted it was a “super complicated” situation for her, too.
“We’ve been separated for eight years. The kids live with me 100 percent of the time. There’s a lot of just stuff, other stuff,” she explained. “I try to stay positive about it all, though. I try to learn from it and be an example to them of how to go through something like this, which is really hard.”
Gerhart added, “I don’t know if I’m doing a good job or if I’m doing it the wrong way or the right way. I just show up. I show up and I’m trying to serve them. I guess time will tell.”
Dane announced in April He was diagnosed with ALSor amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we begin this new chapter,” he said in a statement at the time.

Getty Images(2)The actor later revealed in an interview after announcing his diagnosis that he noticed early signs of the disease after experiencing weakness in his right hand. He further noted that as the disease progressed, he was left with “one functioning arm.”
Gayhart said on Monday’s podcast that she told her and Dane’s daughters that as a family they were going to “do the best we can to get through this.”
“They’re both good girls who have just been through a lot,” Gerhart added.
Dane and Gayheart were married in October 2004. She filed for divorce in February 2018, but Asking for dismissal of her divorce application earlier this year.
“Listen, I’m definitely going through growth as a person, as a person. It’s all very humbling,” Gayhart said during an appearance on “Broad Ideas.” “I think what I hope to pass on to my kids is that you can show up for someone and be there for them, but you also have to show up for yourself.”
She added, “That’s life. Sadly, life is just good and bad moments strung together… You never know what you’re going to get and we should treat today as a very special day. This is not a dress rehearsal.”
Gerhart’s focus is on giving her daughters the opportunity to spend time with Dane “so they don’t look back and say, ‘I wish I could have spent some time with my dad.'”
She added, “I really want to make sure I can help facilitate these things for them, and that’s what I’m doing.”
According to Gayhart, she had no idea what her daughters would “get” out of the situation.
“I know it’s very complicated right now for a lot of reasons,” she explained. “I just hope they can get through this and feel good.”
