According to Gayheart, Dane’s work with ElevenLabs became “a bit of an emergency” because as ALS progressed, he began to lose speech. The model and actress confirmed that Dane and their daughter were able to hear his digital voice before his death in February.
“(Our daughter) said, ‘That’s not a recording. That’s your voice. That’s you,'” Gayhart recalled. “So it’s right. That’s how he talks and they captured such a beautiful feeling.”
She continued, “(Our daughters) signed it and we were so excited to have it because we knew what was coming. We were all struggling with the loss of voice that he had already gone through. It felt really good to know that we had this in our back pocket. I’m sad, and I know Eric was sad too, that we never actually got to use it. But what I do know is that he wanted as many people as possible to be able to use it.”
Dane’s family announced on February 19, 2026 that the former Grey’s Anatomy Starr died less than a year after going public with his ALS diagnosis.
