Police have issued an arrest warrant for a suspect in the Brown University mass shooting that left two people dead and nine injured, sources close to the investigation told BBC America partner CBS News.
Authorities are currently looking for the man and a car rented by the suspect, CBS reported. They have not publicly identified the suspect.
They are also investigating possible links between the Brown University shooting and the killing of an MIT professor two days later.
The search is now in its sixth day, with investigators going door-to-door asking for home security videos and appealing to the public for tips on finding the shooter.
Providence, R.I., police had a news conference planned for Thursday afternoon abruptly canceled, but they said they expected to release an update later in the day.
On Thursday, authorities told CBS sources they were investigating possible links between the shooting and the killing two days later of a professor of nuclear science and engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Nuno F Gomes Loureiro, 47, of Portugal, was shot “multiple times” on Monday at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Providence.
Sources told CBS that police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of a suspect. A rental car matching the description was seen at both crime scenes, sources said.
Federal authorities have previously said there is no connection between the two murders.
On Wednesday, authorities released a photo of a person they believe is close to the person of primary interest.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said they wanted to speak with the person “who may have information relevant to the investigation.”
The chief also said the killer “could be anywhere,” adding “we don’t know where this guy is or who he is.”
A day earlier, police played video of a suspect who was seen walking around the college campus with a black mask over his mouth, possibly “surrounding” the area before committing the crime, Perez said.
The public has expressed frustration that investigations into mass shootings appear to be making little progress so far.
In response, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said he believed the killer would be caught and “it’s just a matter of time before we catch him.”
The FBI is offering a $50,000 (£37,350) reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of those responsible for the attacks.
The shooting occurred during final exams at Brown University’s Barus & Holley Engineering Building.
Authorities identified the two students killed as Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, and Mohammad Aziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek-American freshman.
