Illinois police say they will charge an Illinois driver who hit and killed a pedestrian while surfing on TikTok.
The New York Times said that Tynesha McCarty-Wroten, who posts on TikTok under the name Tea Tyme, has been charged by the Zion Police Department with two counts – negligent homicide and aggravated use of a communication device resulting in death.
In a video that was also shared by other TikTok accounts, a woman who goes by the name Tea Tyme can be seen talking on her phone when there is a loud noise. The invisible child asks, “What is that?” then the woman replies, “I hit a man.”
Surveillance video reportedly showed McCarty-Wroten’s car entering the intersection while the light was still red, and investigators determined she did not appear to slow down or change lanes before hitting Darren Lucas, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
McCarty-Wroten’s lawyer told the NYT that the evidence will show that “what happened was accidental, it was reckless, but it wasn’t intentional or reckless.”
