“I talked to him a few weeks ago. I’ve been texting with him,” Dempsey said, adding that he hopes to recruit Dane, 53, to appear in his new Fox crime drama, killer’s memory.

Although the two stars exited the long-running medical drama more than a decade ago, Dempsey said he remains close to Dane and reflected on his former co-star’s diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
“It’s been very difficult for him, but I do try to stay in touch and see how he’s doing,” the actor said. “I think he was incredibly brave in the face of this terrible disease. He’s a really amazing guy. He has a great sense of humor and is very smart. I’ve always loved working and being around Eric.”
“It’s heartbreaking. It really is. For him and his family. When you see this horrible disease and how quickly it attacks the body, you feel bad for them,” Dempsey added. “But he’s bringing a lot of light to it, and he’s using his platform in a positive way. I wish him the best.”
Dane first revealed that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or motor neuron disease, April 2025. According to the Mayo Clinic, ALS is a “nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord,” causing a loss of muscle control over time.
“I was diagnosed with ALS,” Dane told people last year. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we begin this new chapter.”
He continued: “I feel lucky that I am able to continue working and look forward to returning to Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give me and my family privacy during this time. “

“I’m not going to give up on my goals because of a disease. I just don’t have the ability to do it,” he said. “I had no reason to be in good spirits at any time, on any day. If I went up to my bedroom, crawled under the sheets and cried for the next two weeks, I don’t think anyone would blame me. It was a bit of a surprise when I realized that I wasn’t like that, because I was sure that would be me.”
He added, “I think I have to share my journey with as many people as possible because I feel like my life is not my own anymore.”
