OpenAI says that 18 to 24-year-olds account for about 50% of ChatGPT users in India.

OpenAI seems to have found that the business market resonates with the youth of India. The company said on Friday that users between the ages of 18 and 24 account for about 50% of the messages sent to ChatGPT in the country, and users under 30 account for 80%.

The AI Lab said Indians use ChatGPT mainly for work, with 35% of all communications related to professional services, compared to 30% globally.

In particular, the company’s coding support, Codex, is seeing strong traction: OpenAI said Indians use Codex three times more than the global average, and weekly usage has quadrupled since the tool. I have a Mac app two weeks ago. Consumers in India are also asking three times more text-related questions than the average.

This is in line with the findings of Antropic, which earlier this week said 45.2% of Claude’s maps are using related software in India.

OpenAI said that outside of work tasks, 35% of messages to ChatGPT from Indians asked for guidance, 20% were questions about information, and 20% were requests for a bot to create or help with writing.

India is OpenAI’s second largest market with over 100 million weekly users, and the company has been trying to court Indians for its AI tools and services. The company provides a small $5 registration fee in the country, and last year even ran advertising campaigns promote the establishment.

“AI adoption is moving faster than we can imagine – and that’s a challenge for anyone trying to make informed decisions. Tokens are our way of putting real world evidence, so India’s AI debate can be based on facts, not lies,” said Ronnie Chatterji, an economist at OpenAI.
