OpenAI removes the mission-oriented team, which focuses on the development of ‘safe’ and ‘reliable’ AI.

OpenAI has solved a group that focuses on it – like the company he explained – ensuring that its AI systems are “safe, reliable, and always compatible with human behavior.” At the same time, the former head of the group has been given a new role as “chief futurist” of the company.

In blog post published Wednesday, Josh Achiam, former head of OpenAI’s Alignment team, described his new role as the company’s Chief Futurist. “My goal is to support the mission of OpenAI – to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits all people – by learning how the world will change in the light of AI, AGI, and beyond,” Achiam wrote.

Achiam noted that, in his new role, he will collaborate with Jason Pruet, OpenAI’s chief scientist.

An OpenAI spokeswoman said the rest of the Alignment team — a group of six or seven people — were later assigned to different parts of the company. The spokesman did not say where the team was sent to, but said that they also do similar work. It is also not known whether Achiam will have a new team as part of his “futurist” role.

The spokeswoman said the group’s demise was due to the ongoing restructuring of the fast-moving company.

OpenAI previously had what it calls a “supergroup”—which it was it was launched in 2023 focuses on the long-term threat posed by AI – but the group it was removed in 2024.
