Olympian Breeze Johnson responds to backlash over fiancé’s proposal

Her post came in response to a social media user claiming her partner, Connor WatkinsStealing Johnson’s thunder, she just won gold in women’s downhill alpine skiing on Thursday, February 12th.

Johnson elaborated in an interview USA Today “When I was standing on the medal stand, someone seemed to think he had done it,” he said on Tuesday, February 17.

“Let’s not spoil other people’s delicious food,” Johnson continued. “That’s what I want… He didn’t steal anything.”

She added, “It was such a cool moment for me to bring two of the loves of my life together. Just because it’s not what you want… doesn’t mean you have to comment on it.”

On the day of the proposal, Johnson shared the moment via Instagram, posting a series of photos that included a photo of the ring and an accompanying wooden token with the lyrics engraved on it taylor swiftThe song “alchemy“.

“Hey guys…meet Connor! My ex! And current fiancé!!! 💍,” she captioned the post title. “Thank you to everyone who made this moment possible. This is everything I dreamed of. Kind of like Connor!”

Swift, 36, even commented herself, adding another line from the song.

“‘Where’s the trophy? He just ran over to me’ Congratulations!!!” she wrote.

“You work so hard and accomplish so much, yet you still find time to love me, make me feel special, and most importantly, you help me love myself,” Watkins said during the proposal on the Today show. “I only want to spend the rest of my life one way, and that is by your side. I love you. Will you marry me?”

Their moment came shortly after Johnson’s fall on the super-G field. She told TODAY that seeing Watkins at the base of the mountain helped rejuvenate her.

After Lindsey Vonn fell during a downhill race on Sunday, February 8, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team announced the pair for the 2026 Olympic women’s team mixed event. Team USA said in its announcement that “coaches select teams based on results criteria from evaluation events including the 2026 Olympic downhill competition.”

“When you make mistakes like that in ski racing, you feel stupid…it was really exciting to see him,” Johnson said.

Watkins added that he was relieved to see her recover.

“I was relieved after the accident that she was back on her feet and doing well,” he said. “Then my heart started racing again because I knew I was about to get down on my knees and propose.”

Johnson is a seasoned expert at hitting back at social media critics. In 2022, she publicly admitted that she was bisexual and sent a message to trolls via Instagram.

“To the trolls out there who want hate, hate cannot defeat love,” she wrote. “For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, head to Google if you want to know. For those who just want to know about racing, head to Copper for final training! LFG With love to everyone who supported me, I’m grateful.”
