Officials say ‘person of interest’ in Brown University shooting in custody

A shooting at Brown University in the United States left two people dead and a person involved has been detained, police said.

A gunman opened fire at a college in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday, injuring nine people.

Police confirmed Sunday that one person had been detained after an order requiring people on Brown University’s campus and surrounding areas to shelter in place was lifted.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said seven people are in stable condition, including one in critical but stable condition and another who has been released from the hospital.

According to officials, a gunman opened fire in a classroom in the Hawley Engineering Building on the east end of the Brown University campus around 16:00 local time (21:00 GMT) on Saturday.

The identities of those killed and injured have not been released, but Brown University President Christine Paxson told reporters at a news conference Saturday that all the victims, including those killed and injured, were students.

Police earlier released CCTV footage showing a male suspect leaving the scene wearing all black. Police said no gun was found during a search of the building.

After the man was detained on Sunday, Police Chief Oscar Perez confirmed that police were not looking for anyone else but were working with prosecutors to collect evidence.

Smiley said the city should be able to “breathe a sigh of relief” after the shelter-in-place order is lifted.

“We have trained for this moment, but this is not what any community should be training for,” he added.

Brown University President Christina Paxson said the city has “a long recovery ahead of us.”
