When it comes to AI chatbots, there is currently a battle for consumer interest. All chatbot providers are looking to increase their user base and, in a bit of self-indulgence, Google has just made it easier for users of other chatbots to opt out of Gemini.
Thursday, company he announced what it calls “transfer tools,” new widgets designed to allow users to transfer “reminders” (mostly personal information) and entire chat history from other chatbots directly to Gemini. Users can easily share “great interests, relationships, and personal experiences” this way, the company says.
The idea is to make it easier to adopt Google’s AI assistant, since users don’t have to spend a lot of time re-teaching Gemini who they are and what they want.
The recall works like this: Gemini will provide a prompt for the user to log into their current chatbot, which will generate a response that can be copied and fed back to Gemini. In this way, Gemini teaches the user what kind of information can help to find out about them, and helps to send that information to its database.

“Once you send these memories, Gemini will understand key information you’ve shared with other apps, such as your hobbies, your sibling’s name, or where you grew up,” the company says. “Instead of just getting started, you can get Gemini up to speed on what’s most important to you.”
When it comes to importing chat history, Google says that all you need to do is put it in a zip file. It’s easy to send chat text via zip from most chatbots – including from ChatGPT and Claude. This allows users to “pick up where you left off,” the company says. Google says users also have the ability to search through past conversations.
ChatGPT is still the big kahuna in the consumer chatbot market, with OpenAI announcing its arrival last month. 900 million users every week. Gemini – although Google has many advantages to share, including its default placement on all Android devices and the Chrome browser – has lagged behind in the minds of consumers. Last month, it shared its numbers during Alphabet’s fourth-quarter earnings call, saying Gemini outperformed. 750 million monthly users. This move is intended to help Google catch up.
