Notre Dame lost the game 72-71 after a controversial foul in the final seconds of the game allowed Carr to earn a free throw.
The referee initially ruled a foul on Carr’s three-point shot. Come on come on Amesthen reversed the call, and then reversed the call again, causing confusion and frustration among both teams.
Carr got the extra free throw after Ames hit a 3-pointer that was fouled, leaving Notre Dame in disbelief and frustration boiling over what happened next.
Shrewsbury, who did not speak to the media after the game, issued a statement on Saturday, January 3 expressing remorse for his actions.
“I would like to apologize for what happened after the Cal game last night,” Shrewsbury said in a statement. Published via. “My actions were inappropriate and not emblematic of the leader I strive to be and what Notre Dame expects of its coaches and educators.”

Following the incident, ACC also issued a statement condemning Shrewsbury’s behavior towards the official.
“Shrewsbury was involved in a heated confrontation with a member of the officiating staff following the game. This unsportsmanlike conduct is unacceptable and tarnishes the on-field competition between these institutions,” the conference said in a statement. “The ACC considers the matter closed and will make no further comment.”
It is unclear whether Shrewsbury will suffer any consequences as a result of the incident.
After his team helped him calm down, Shrewsbury followed the traditional postgame handshake route with other players and coaches, pausing to talk and hug some Cal players.

“There were so many emotions in the gym — for the officials, for me, for the other team — but I’m grateful that Day stood up and shot,” Madsen said. “I’m grateful for Dai’s maturity, calmness and composure to be able to shoot free throws.”
He continued: “I thought there was a foul. (The officials) talked a few times and they allowed it.”
Cal improves to 13-2 (1-1 ACC) with the win, while Notre Dame falls to 10-5 (1-1).
