Night strike hits residential building, at least four killed

Russia and Ukraine launched drone attacks on each other overnight, killing at least five people.

Kiev officials said a “massive” nighttime Russian drone attack on the city killed at least two people and injured six others.

Attacks early Tuesday also hit at least two residential buildings, causing fires and knocking out power and water supplies.

Meanwhile, Russian officials said a Ukrainian attack in the Rostov region killed at least three people.

The latest attack came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed changes to the United States’ controversial 28-point peace plan to end the war with Russia.

Kiev’s military chief, Tymur Tkachenko, said a fire broke out in a high-rise residential apartment building in the Dneprovsky district, forcing residents to evacuate.

Emergency services at the scene said that 18 people, including three children, had been rescued. After the fire was brought under control, the search for victims continued.

Kiev’s mayor said a second high-rise apartment building in the central Pechersk district was also on fire after being hit during the strike.

Vitali Klitschko said residents had been evacuated and the upper floors of the building were damaged, but the fire had been extinguished.

Ukrainian air defense forces responded to the attack, explosions were heard across Kiev and residents were urged to take shelter in underground parking lots and bunkers.

Ukraine’s Energy Ministry also confirmed that the country’s energy infrastructure suffered a “large-scale, coordinated enemy attack.”

“Energy officials will begin assessing the consequences and recovery efforts as soon as the security situation permits,” the company said in a statement.

Also overnight, Russian officials in the Rostov region said the death toll from the Ukrainian attack had risen to three, after initial reports said one person had been killed.

Yuri Sliusar, acting governor of Russia’s Rostov region, wrote on Telegram: “Doctors were unable to save the other two; they died of their injuries in hospital.”

“Tonight’s enemy attack brings great sorrow,” he added.

A death was reported in the city of Taganrog, with the city’s mayor Svetlana Kambulova vowing to take “necessary response measures”.

Another 10 people were injured during the strike.

In the southern Krasnodar region, Governor Veniamin Kondratiev described Ukraine’s night bombings as “one of the most sustained and massive attacks by the Kiev regime.”

The latest exchange of attacks between Ukraine and Russia comes as peace talks continue between U.S. and Ukrainian officials.

Ukraine’s European allies appear to have drawn up a revised version of the plan after rejecting parts that would benefit Russia’s war aims.

on Monday, Zelensky said he would take some positive steps to reach an achievable agreementsaying “many of the right elements have been incorporated into the framework”.

“The list of necessary steps to end the war has now become feasible…” he wrote on Telegram.

But a Kremlin official rejected the amendments, calling them “totally unconstructive.”

In the United States, White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt said President Donald Trump was “hopeful and optimistic” that a plan to end the war could be developed.
