NCIS Just Killed Off a Main Character in Episode 500—The Actors Tell How Leaving was “not” their choice show.
On the Tuesday, March 24 episode of the hit CBS series, Rocky CarrollThe character Leon Vance is shot dead by a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) agent. Initially, it looked like Vance was wearing a vest, but he ended up bleeding profusely from a fatal gunshot wound.
“No, it wasn’t my choice,” Carroll said. NCIS Since 2008, tell TV Insider. “Basically, the studio and the network wanted to do something really spectacular, really big, and really send shockwaves through the NCIS fanbase and community.”
Carroll recalls executive producer Steven D. Binder breaking down the vision.
“Well, as we know, NCIS as an agency is in deep danger of being wiped out and merged into another agency because there’s an evil figure behind it plotting to undermine it. Director Vance has figured out who that person is,” he explained. “In the process of saving the institution, he lost his life. It’s a great story. Do you want to hear more? I’m like, ‘Wait, let’s go back a little bit. Back to what you said in the process of saving the institution, he lost his life.'”
The actor was able to understand what led to the decision, adding, “I think as a playwright and director after 23 years, you’ve pretty much told every story, and a lot of them you’ve told more than once. So, when it was all said and done, when they told me the whole plot and the story, my first thought, to be completely honest, was, ‘This is actually a great story.'”
although Reflect on his time NCISCarroll said he didn’t expect to play Vance for nearly two decades.
“It was a pretty good match. I’m very proud of this episode,” he added. “There are so many benefits that we shouldn’t feel depressed about it.”

“It’s not like, ‘Okay, you’re emotional, but you can’t be that way in this episode,'” Carroll continued. “If this had happened in my third season as director of Vance, it would have felt a lot different. But after turning 18, after my character had basically spent two lifetimes in the world of television, I said, ‘Playing a character on one of the highest-rated television shows in the world for 18 seasons is the equivalent of living to be 105.’ In my world, it’s like if you go on a show and live to be 105 A memorial service for someone who was 105 years old and you think, yeah, I’m sorry that he passed away, but I mean, gosh, he lived to be 105. That’s how I feel about my character.
Binder also weighing in on shocking Reorganize.
“There has always been a real stake,” he told the outlet. “It’s never easy to say goodbye to any of our characters, but we want to be as respectful as possible to Loki and his legacy on the show – in this case, giving his life so his institution could survive.”
Going forward, Binder promised that the team “will grieve,” he said, “but we think it’s important that at the end of the episode the team not only focuses on Vance’s sacrifice, but also on their loss. Vance died protecting them all. They will honor that by putting one foot in front of the other and continuing their mission to protect and defend the country.”
