National Guard troops ‘slowly recovering’ after shooting in Washington, D.C.

A National Guard soldier is recovering after being seriously injured in an ambush-style shooting in Washington, D.C., last month.

The parents of 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe said “the wound on his head is slowly healing and he is starting to ‘look more like himself,'” West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey said.

Morrissey said in a statement that the family expects the Air Force staff sergeant to spend the next two to three weeks in intensive care and they are optimistic about his progress.

Sergeant Wolf was one of two West Virginia National Guard members shot to death on November 26 when a gunman opened fire not far from the White House. His colleague, Sarah Beckstrom, 20, Died from injuries.

“We continue to ask for the prayers of all West Virginians and Americans!” the governor said. in his statement.

On Friday night, Morrissey attended a vigil for Sergeant Wolfe at Musselman High School in Inwood, West Virginia, where the guard was a former student.

A chaplain at the vigil read a message from the soldier’s parents, Jason and Melody Wolfe.

“We know there is still a long way to go,” they wrote, according to local news outlet Metro News.

“But our faith keeps us hopeful. We remain grateful for the prayers and support from people around the world.”

Earlier this week, the governor said Sgt Wolf gave a thumbs up to a nurse and was able to move his toes.

Police charged the suspected gunman, Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, with first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill.

Before coming to the United States in 2021, he was a counterterrorism soldier with a CIA-backed unit, working with U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

Sergeant Wolf was one of 2,000 National Guard members deployed to the Capitol by President Donald Trump in August as part of his crackdown on immigration and crime-related operations in the Democratic-led city.

After the shooting, Trump said he wanted to send an additional 500 National Guard troops to the capital.

The Trump administration has also cited the shootings as reason for additional immigration crackdowns.
