He said he blacked out from the alleged attack but woke up and told Torrent she needed to be with Safra, who was immobile due to a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.
Authorities eventually learned that there was no intruder and that the injuries Maher received from his attacker were actually self-inflicted.
Maher told investigators during questioning that he feared losing his job due to a strained relationship with a senior nurse, A&E reported.. Maher hopes to impress Safra by setting him on fire. He believed that saving him from the fire would demonstrate Safra’s loyalty and make the billionaire grateful.
The case went to trial in 2002, and Maher was ultimately found guilty of arson and causing death. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and released in early 2007.
Maher’s headlines didn’t end there, however, as he successfully escaped from prison in January 2003 with another prisoner. The pair cut the cell window with a razor blade and lowered themselves from the cell using a rope fashioned from smuggled rubbish bags. They managed to reach Nice, France before being arrested the next day.
