A Texas mother is behind bars after being accused of abusing her son by forcing him to undergo unnecessary medical procedures when he was healthy.

Laura was arrested late last month by the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office and charged with serious bodily injury to a child and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. If she posts bond, the judge will prohibit her from contacting her son. She must also avoid contact with anyone 17 and under.

In February this year, police were contacted accusing Laura of lying about her son’s medical history in order to undergo surgery in June 2025 to install an unnecessary feeding tube.
When Laura tried to leave Children’s Medical Center Dallas with her son in February, against the advice of doctors, she was flagged for possible abuse. Laura claimed in interviews with investigators that her son was unable to eat by mouth and that he essentially lived in a cozy bed, a tent-like enclosure that could only be opened from the outside.
After the boy was taken away from his mother, he began eating normal food and was able to walk on his own, police said.
Investigators looked into Laura’s social media activity and found links to online fundraisers documenting her son’s alleged health issues.
Police said they spoke with medical professionals who said the mother began making false statements about her son’s health shortly after his birth in August 2022. Laura allegedly told doctors she had difficulties giving birth and that her son’s brain might be starved of oxygen when he was born. The unnamed boy needs gabapentin, an appetite stimulant, to eat solid food.

She also allegedly claimed in late May 2025 that her son suffered from cerebral palsy, autism, mitochondrial disease and developmental delays. She asked for Posey’s bed on the grounds that his “kicking” caused damage to three cribs.
Police said it took her months to reach for the feeding tube and told them she had to hold her son down to feed him and take his medication.
Police learned the boy was eating a variety of foods and gaining weight whenever he wasn’t around Laura, which she said was an ongoing problem.
‘Medical abuse of children is a horrific crime,’ Tarrant County Sgt. Bill Welburn said in a statement. “These cases are often complex and difficult to investigate, which can result in them being overlooked in the criminal justice system. We remain committed to ensuring every report is taken seriously and every child receives the protection they deserve.”

It is understood Laura may have suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, now known as a factitious disorder imposed on others. This is a rare mental illness when a caregiver fabricates or exaggerates the illness of the person they are caring for in order to gain attention and sympathy.
