A Missouri family had a rude awakening last week when they discovered a nearly naked woman sitting in their kitchen, petting their dog and devouring fruit rocks.
Dear Joanne Smith He was arrested in Springfield on Tuesday, March 3, according to court documents provided to Houston, Mo. US Weekly.
That morning, police were called by a woman who said she was outside doing yard work when her son came back from the kitchen after seeing Smith, 23.
She told the 911 operator that the boy explained to her that “there was a strange lady in the kitchen eating cereal.”
Indeed, Smith was there, without pants, shoes or socks, a jacket wrapped around his waist, chewing on some Fruit Pebbles.
The son told police he smelled something burning in the house, so he went to the kitchen to check on the situation, court documents said. There, he saw Smith happily petting one of the family dogs while tinkering with the oven.
The woman who called 911 allegedly confronted Smith and asked the unknown woman to clean up the milk and cereal she had spilled on the kitchen floor.
But Smith didn’t agree. When police arrived, they found Smith still in the kitchen. Police said from all indications she was under the influence of a controlled substance.
Smith spent several minutes trying to tell police her name, according to court documents. She also allegedly made statements using made-up words and was said to be smiling and giggling as she interacted with police.
The next day, police said they spoke with Smith while she was still in jail and conscious.
“Smith stated that she went out and walked around and observed what she considered to be a ‘fair’ home,” court documents read. “Smith stated that she walked to the front door, knocked on the door, and rang the doorbell. Smith stated that she heard noises inside and walked into the residence. Smith stated that once she was hungry, she wanted to eat cereal.”
Smith said she did not turn on the stove, claiming it was on when she first walked in.
She also allegedly smoked some marijuana before returning home.

Smith was charged with first-degree burglary but has entered a not guilty plea.
Investigators said she told police she did not want to remain in jail because she had an upcoming court appearance in another county.
She was arrested on Nov. 29, 2025, for tampering with a motor vehicle and driving on a suspended or revoked license, records show. She was also arrested in late 2024, but it’s not clear from the records what she was charged with at that time.
On Monday, March 9, it was unclear whether she had hired an attorney to represent her in court.
