James’ wife, Kimberly VanderBeekOn Sunday, March 8, she posted a Story on Instagram to commemorate her fond memories with the late actor. his 49th birthday – and sharing new moments with the couple’s six children. In the video, children gather around an outdoor table and look at the gifts Humes gave them.
“Who do you think this is from?” Kimberly asked, and the children responded in unison: “Mary Margaret.” When Kimberly asked what was in the box, the children exclaimed: “Cookies!”
“We always get them on daddy’s birthday,” Kimberly explained, and one of the kids said, “Don’t stop sending these.”
Before opening the box, the children read a note written by Humes that read: “Goodbye is only for those who love with their eyes. For those who love with their heart and soul, there is no such thing as separation. Happy birthday, kid. I love you.”
Humes retweeted the video and added two hearts next to the text, “Forever family.” Humes also passed Instagram On Sunday, she shared a collage of throwback photos with her on-screen son and his family.
“You were just a thought away,” Humes wrote. “Happy birthday James… #familyfirst #foreverfriends @vanderkimberly ❤️.”
News broke in February that James had passed away after a battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer. He is 48 years old.

Humes shared a selfie of the two and a throwback photo to pay tribute to James.

James, my merciful warrior, you fought a tough battle against all odds with such quiet strength and dignity,” Humes wrote on Instagram at the time. “I will always love and admire you to this end. Our last conversation…just a few days ago…will forever be placed gently in my heart and kept safe. To our extended Dawson Creek family friends, please respect our silence at this time as beautiful Kimberly and family request quiet privacy at this time. “
