A commuter train derailed and crashed near Barcelona, killing a train driver and injuring at least 14 people, local media reported.

The Rodalies train collided with a retaining wall on Tuesday night, which fell on the tracks between Gelida and Sant Sadurní, according to local officials.

Emergency services are currently assessing the severity of the passengers’ injuries.

The incident occurred as storms hit northeastern Spain.

Emergency services said 11 ambulances were treating the injured at the scene in Galida, Catalonia, about 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) west of Barcelona.

The local fire department said that 35 firefighters were dispatched to the scene to rescue a passenger trapped in the train.

Many coastal areas in eastern and northwestern Spain are on high alert due to the weather. Snowstorms also hit the Spanish Pyrenees and along the coast of Menorca, triggering waves several meters high.

The accident in Catalonia came two days after two high-speed trains collided in Adamuz, Andalusia, in one of Spain’s worst rail accidents in more than a decade.

It is understood that a train bound for Madrid derailed and crossed the opposite track before colliding with an oncoming high-speed train, killing at least 42 people.
