After ruling out multiple sclerosis and cancer, Sarah’s doctors diagnosed her with ALS and estimated her life expectancy to be two to five years.
In the spring of 2025, Rusty and Sara sat their sons down to prepare them for their mother’s death.
“This was the worst conversation I’ve ever had in my life,” Rusty told the outlet. “And they’re handling it much better than we are.”
To the family’s surprise, Sara made it through the holidays last year and celebrated Rusty’s birthday on New Year’s Eve.
“It was awesome. We saw the ball drop,” he recalled. “(Sarah) is in our master bedroom; she hasn’t really been able to go anywhere for the past few months, but we just hang out in the bedroom.”
Sarah announced her death posthumously January 13, 39, via a prewritten message.
“I’m not in pain and I’m not tired. I can laugh, talk and move,” she wrote on Instagram, where she has more than 114,000 followers. “Looking back on the last few months of my life, I’m glad that even with the pain, I didn’t snap. I completed my list. Even if you don’t believe in anything, I was feeding the earth and my trees. I love this life and am grateful for this time.”
