Killer whales and dolphins seen hunting together in rare video

Scientists have captured rare footage of killer whales and Pacific white-sided dolphins hunting together off the coast of British Columbia, Canada.

Although orcas are commonly known as “killer whales,” they are actually the largest species of dolphin.

The discovery, published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports, is the first documented evidence of the collaboration, the researchers said.

They study mammals using drones and camera tags to understand feeding behavior.

Lead researcher Dr. Sarah Fortune from Dalhousie University in Canada said: “Not only did the killer whales orient themselves towards the dolphins on the surface, but when the dolphins started diving, the killer whales we tagged also started diving.”
