Jarvis Butts The Michigan Department of Corrections confirmed that Harris, who was serving a minimum of 2,059 years in prison for killing Harris and multiple sexual assaults, died by suicide on Thursday, March 26, two weeks later.
Harris was 13 when she died in January 2024. Butts was not charged with killing the JE Clark Preparatory Academy student until 2025.
Her body was never found. Now that the only person who knows her location has died, the girl’s relatives have given up hope that they will one day be able to provide her with a proper burial.
Butts, 43, of Detroit, was sentenced March 12 to 35 to 60 years in prison. He was also sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison on five other sexual assault charges. Investigators say one of his victims was a minor relative.
An Ohio man has been arrested after the disappearance of 17-year-old Hailey Buzbee, according to police. She disappeared from her home in Indiana nearly a month ago and is believed to be dead, according to police. “After an extensive investigation, we believe Hailey is deceased,” Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness said at a press conference on Sunday, February 1.
MDOC said he died in his cell at the Charles Eger Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson County. Prison staff attempted to revive the man but were unsuccessful.
Butts pleaded guilty on February 12, less than two weeks before the trial was scheduled to begin.
Butts allegedly admitted to dumping Harris’ body near 7 Mile and Berg in Detroit’s Rouge River neighborhood, where police initially searched for the 13-year-old girl.
Harris was last seen getting off the school bus on January 9, 2024.
Prosecutors said “overwhelming evidence” showed Harris was dead, and investigators said they believed Butts killed the girl because she was pregnant with his child. Before Harris was murdered, Butts searched online for abortion, the abortion pill and drinking red antifreeze.

Searchers did find a inside-out pink jumpsuit, a black jacket and a pair of red and black shoes near 7 Mile Street and Berg. Police said based on the condition of the clothes, they did not appear to have been there long.
The Detroit Police Department said in a statement Thursday that they were aware Butts was dead.
“While the legal process ended with a conviction in court, our work is not done,” read the statement obtained by Us Weekly. “The department will pursue all leads in the homicide and continue working to locate Nazia Harris’ body to help bring closure to her family.”
