“It’s been a roller coaster ride,” Coulier said on Dec. 2. “To go through chemo and feel the relief of, ‘Wow, it’s gone,’ and then get tested and now it shows you have another cancer… it’s a shock to the whole system.”
Coulier announced his initial diagnosis in November 2024. He later confirmed in March He doesn’t have cancer.
“It’s been a very difficult year and chemo is exhausting,” Coulier said on the morning show. “A few months ago I had a PET scan and it showed something sticking out. The doctor said, ‘We don’t know what it is, but there’s something at the base of your tongue.'”
Initially, Coulier’s “painful” biopsy showed no signs of cancer. However, another appointment in October showed a renewed burst of growth. Coulier later had an MRI and CT scan, and doctors performed another biopsy, removing most of his tongue. He was eventually diagnosed with early-stage tongue cancer.
“They said it had nothing to do with my non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It was a new cancer. … I said, ‘Are you kidding me?'” Coulier recalled. “They said it might have come from HPV from 30 years ago. A lot of people have HPV, but they said mine got activated and turned into cancer.”
The disease is caught early enough that it is “very treatable,” Coulier said. Doctors advised him to start radiation treatment “immediately”.
“It’s a completely different animal than chemotherapy. It doesn’t feel as aggressive as chemotherapy, but there are still side effects,” he said of radiation, noting that he’s “cautiously optimistic” about the process. “The silver lining here is that I had cancer, which helped me discover my other cancers. It seems crazy to make a statement like this, but it’s true.”
