Jimmy, 58, revealed last week that his childhood friend Escobedo had died at the age of 59. Escobedo has been the frontman of the late night show band Cleto and the Cletones since its debut in 2003.
“This morning we lost a great friend, father, son, musician and man, my long-time bandleader Cleto Escobedo III,” the late-night host said via Instagram Nov. 11, “To say we are heartbroken is an understatement. Cleto and I have been inseparable since we were nine years old. Working together every day is a dream neither of us could have imagined. Cherish your friend and please keep Cleto’s wife, children and parents in your prayers.”

Escobedo’s cause of death He was later diagnosed with “cardiogenic shock…with vasodilatory shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation and alcoholic cirrhosis as the underlying causes,” according to a death certificate obtained by TMZ.

“There was a boy who lived on my block. … He was a little older than me. He was a year older than me. His name was Clayto,” Jimmy said on Nov. 11, fighting back tears. “Eventually we met. We became friends — and not just friends. We became 24/7 ‘Mom, please let me sleep over at your house’ kind of friends. One summer, I spent the night at Escobedo’s house 33 nights in a row, literally. My mother used to bring me to my knees and beg me to sleep in his house, and I was happy to do that because we were never bored.”
Jimmy said his friendship with Escobedo lasted into adulthood. When Jimmy got the chance to host his own late-night show, he wanted Escobedo by his side.

“I wanted Clayto to lead my band. … The thought of anyone but him leading the band was scary. It had to be him,” he said. “I was so scared that they would say no and I would have to start another band. I had to work up the courage to bring it up. Because I knew (saying), ‘My best friend growing up plays saxophone, he can lead the band’ was not a good idea.”
In addition to Cleto, Jimmy also brought his friend’s father, Cleto Escobedo Sr.
“Not only did I want Clayto to lead the band, I wanted his dad to be in the band,” Kimmel continued, noting that Clayto and his father auditioned with ABC executives before officially landing the gig. “We have worked together every day for nearly 23 years.”
