Jennifer Garner is opening up about her difficult breakup with her ex-husband, Ben Affleck.
“You have to be smart about what you can and can’t handle, and I can’t handle what’s out there,” the 53-year-old actress said in an interview. Marie Claire UK Published on Wednesday, January 7th. “But what’s out there isn’t the hard thing. The facts are the hard thing.”
Affleck, 53, and Garner fell in love after starring in the 2003 film Daredevil. The pair tied the knot in 2005 and welcomed three children: Violet, 19, Serafina, 16, and Samuel, 13. Garner and Affleck announced their split in 2015, and their divorce was finalized three years later.
“It’s the real breakdown of the family that’s the most difficult,” Garner continued. “The loss of true partnership and friendship is difficult.”

While the transition was a challenge at first, Garner persevered, she said, thanks in part to the support of her loved ones.
“I’ve made a huge, concerted effort to see my staff as much as possible because that’s what’s most important,” she explained to the outlet. “That’s where your resilience lies: It’s in your relationships, in the people who support you through it.”
Despite the rocky relationship between Garner and Affleck, they have maintained a strong bond while raising their children together.
“At this point, I’m able to co-parent my children with peace and calm and have a partnership that I don’t know I’ll ever get back to,” Garner said Wednesday. “I think when women think, ‘Oh, I’ll never see this, I’ll never feel that way, I’ll never be friends with this person again,’ they need to know that time is opportunity. Time is opportunity to heal. Time is opportunity to forgive, move on, and find new ways to be friends.”
Affleck also gushed about his co-parenting dynamic with Garner.
“I’m really lucky that I have a really wonderful co-parent and partner, the kids’ mom, Jennifer Garner, who’s great, great, and we work well together,” the actor said of his ex-wife in a March 2025 interview with GQ.
