indy car driver Scott McLaughlin miraculously left terrible car accident Before the Alabama Grand Prix.
The 32-year-old Team Penske driver was conducting a practice session at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday, March 28, when his car suddenly spun and the rear end broke through the fence at the edge of the track. Multiple media outlets reported that although the collision looked horrific, McLaughlin was not injured.
Shortly after the incident, McLaughlin assured his fans that he would be back at the track for Sunday’s race.
“That one is mine. Show tomorrow P14. So proud of everyone at #Thirsty3’s and @team_penske for getting our battery car back together,” McLaughlin wrote via Instagram Saturday night. “She’s still pretty fast and we can go to work in the morning.”
During the live telecast, commentators on Fox Sports 1 explained to viewers how close McLaughlin came to a potentially catastrophic situation. Dashcam video shows the driver putting his hands on his head in response to the impact as he turned the car far enough to prevent it from hitting the safety barrier head-first.
“The impact on the tire stack must be 150 mph,” one commentator explained, before clarifying that the speed may actually be closer to 170 mph.
“The bottom line, guys, is that all of this (safety) equipment definitely does its job,” one reporter told the audience. “It slows down traffic.”
His colleagues agreed. “(The safety equipment) allowed Scott to slow down and (save) from a horrific impact. There was a horrific incident in Turn One.”
The FS1 review team compared the high-strength safety cables in McLaughlin’s car to “an F14 stationary on an aircraft carrier.”
“The cables definitely kept McLaughlin in the stadium and out of the parkland,” a reporter explained on the broadcast.
Shortly after the car accident, McLaughlin is shown He was able to crawl out of the “completely destroyed” car with the help of emergency response teams. He hugged some of the Team Penske pit crew and eventually left under his own power.

“My team is so lucky, not just the #thirsty3s but everyone in the #2 and #12 cars that raced today,” he wrote via Instagram. “Then building me a brand new car and giving me the confidence to go into qualifying. Thank you to the team. Team Sport, it’s all ready for tomorrow.”
McLaughlin joins the Team Penske IndyCar Series lineup in 2021, making his official debut at the Firestone Grand Prix in St. Petersburg, Florida. He followed that up with third-place finishes in the 2023 and 2024 IndyCar Series and his best performance at the 2024 Indy 500, where he finished sixth.
