A South Carolina woman is accused of operating an illegal day care center out of her apartment and allegedly leaving eight children inside alone when the home caught fire.
The North Charleston Police Department said in a statement Press release That Janana Pio Ferreira He was detained on Thursday, March 12 and charged with eight counts of unlawful conduct towards a child.
On March 12 at approximately 2:30 p.m., officers and firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire at Arbor Square Apartments in North Charleston.
“When emergency crews arrived, they found eight teenagers inside the apartment without adult supervision,” the release reads. “Prior to firefighters’ arrival, officials were advised that the fire suppression system had extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported.”
Shortly after authorities reported the scene, Ferreira, 29, returned home “with several other children.” Authorities quickly identified her as a resident of the apartment where the fire occurred.
Police said they determined Ferreira was “operating an illegal day care center within the apartment” and believed she had a responsibility to care for the children. However, police said she left her children unattended inside the residence when the fire broke out.
Ferreira was eventually taken into custody and booked on eight counts of unlawful conduct with a child, one for each child accused of remaining in the apartment during the fire, according to the release.
Police have not disclosed the ages of the children who were left at the home, and it is unclear how long the children were left alone at the home, but authorities contacted the children’s parents regarding the incident.
“The North Charleston Fire Department conducted an investigation and concluded that the fire was caused by a malfunctioning aftermarket knob on the stove,” the release said. “NCPD and NCFD are currently working together on an ongoing investigation.”
While investigating the case, investigators reportedly came to believe that one of the children left a backpack on the stove, causing it to catch fire. WCIV.
“Sometimes the kids play with the fire, sometimes they play with the stove, sometimes they turn the stove on,” NCFD Chief Det. Christian Rennie told the TV station about the incident. “We could have had a completely different conversation today – a completely different story.”
Ferreira is currently being held on a $200,000 bond, with each bond set at $25,000. She is reportedly scheduled to appear in court for her first hearing on May 1. law and crime.
