John Legend‘s nickname wasn’t always so legendary. In fact, a legal contract was even required to gain the rights to use his now-popular stage name.

Legend decided to adopt the name because he realized the stage name would “bring attention to people.”
“Then I had to make it happen,” he said. “And, look, there was a porn producer – I kid you not – a porn producer who was involved in country music, his name was johnny legend. The fact that he makes music, rock music, and his name is Johnny Legend means there may be a case of trademark infringement. “
So the father-of-four needed to ask Johnny, 77, born Martin Margulies, for the right to be “John Legend” on stage.
“We have to find Johnny Legend, negotiate with him and come to a mutually exclusive agreement that says he is John Legend and I am John Legend,” the “All of Me” singer said. “(We agreed) that he would not sue me and I would not sue him (and) that he would not try to pass himself off as John Legend to get into the soul music industry.”
He continued, “I’m happy to say that I kept my end of the bargain. I didn’t make any porn, and I didn’t make any rock music impersonating Johnny Legend.”
Since becoming parents in 2016, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have been busy creating memories with their four children. “It’s a little surreal.
