Gymnast Dominic Dawes mourns father-in-law after he is found dead


gymnast Dominic Dawes is mourning the death of her father-in-law, Leonard Thompson.

taken to Instagram To alert fans on Saturday, December 20, that Thompson was missing and to plead for help, the 49-year-old four-time Olympic medalist confirmed later that day that Thompson already dead. He is 79 years old.

Dawes originally wrote in a video greeting fans, “Please help my family. Find my father-in-law Leonard Thompson. Caucasian male, 79 years old, with white hair. He may have experienced a help incident and is most likely disoriented and confused. Last seen in Winchester, VA, his vehicle was abandoned in Roanoke, VA. Law enforcement believes he was picked up by a truck driver and headed south on 81 Miles. Anything you can do to share this article and help us get national exposure so my kids can see their grandpa again.”

Dawes and her husband, Jeff Thompsonhas four children: daughters Catri and Quinn, and twin sons Dakota and Lincoln.

Leonard’s death was announced in a subsequent Instagram post on Saturday, with Dawes sharing a photo of her father-in-law smiling at one of his sons as an infant and writing over the photo: “RIP Dad T. We will hold on to the memories. It is with a very heavy heart that I share that my father-in-law has been found, but not in the way we had hoped.”

Dawes expressed an emotional reflection on the day and her final time with Leonard in the caption of the post. “We are comforted to know that he is now with our Lord and Savior. Thank you all for your prayers and support during this very difficult time. Our last moments with him were accompanying him at Mass and giving him a hug and my husband and I said, ‘Come home safe,'” she wrote.

according to USA TodayLeonard’s body was found Saturday in southwest Virginia. The outlet reported on Sunday, Dec. 21, that his car “was found Tuesday (Dec. 16) on Interstate 81 near Roanoke with a flat tire and the keys missing.”

Before Dawes made his personal plea via captured video, the athlete shared a missing persons notice via Instagram detailing Leonard’s appearance and last known activities. The official notice states that while Leonard was last seen at “1930 hours” on Monday, December 15, in Herndon, Virginia, he was “believed to be walking” in the area at the time.

Dawes, nicknamed “Great, great, greatDawes won her first Olympic medal when she won gold with Team USA at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. At that Olympics, Dawes also won an individual bronze medal in the floor exercise.

Dawes founded the Dominique Dawes Gymnastics and Ninja Academy in Clarksburg, Maryland, in 2020, with additional locations opening in Rockville, Maryland, in April 2023, and in Columbia in 2024.
