South African police said a manhunt was underway after a shooting at a pub in a town near Johannesburg left nine people dead and 10 injured.
They said about 12 unidentified gunmen arrived in Beksdal in two vehicles and “shot at pub patrons and continued firing randomly as they fled the scene”.
The shooting occurred at around 01:00 local time on Sunday (23:00 GMT on Saturday). Police added that the pub was licensed.
South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with 45 murders per 100,000 people, according to 2023-24 data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
