Grammarly’s ‘expert review’ is just missing real experts

A recent addition in the By Grammar aims to curate user articles with the help of writers and thinkers from around the world – and other technical journalists, too.

It was launched in August 2025 as part of a large group of AI-driven productsExpert Review is available as part of Grammarly’s main writing tool, allowing users to bring review ideas “just like” essay experts.

Wired wrote that Grammarly edits this comment as if it were from a well-known author, whether living or dead. Sometimes, according to The Vergeit can appear to be from tech journalists at The Verge, Wired, Bloomberg, The New York Times, and other publications.

Of course, I can’t help but wonder: What about TechCrunch? I copied the original text of this post into Grammarly hoping to see some advice from my fellow TCs, but instead they told me to add traditional like Casey Newton, “add reader notes” like Kara Swisher, and “ask the big question” like Timnit Gebru.

What was disappointing: Yes, the format seems thoughtless and ill-advised, but if All these other pubs have been mentioned, so what are we doing wrong?

However, to be clear, none of these figures appear to be involved in Expert Reviews or have given Grammarly permission to use their names. Alex Gay, Grammarly’s vice president of sales and marketing for Superhuman, told The Verge that these artists are being cited “because their publications are publicly available and widely cited.”

And in his own user interfaceGrammarly states, “Professor testimonials in Expert Reviews are for informational purposes only and do not indicate any affiliation with Grammarly or endorsement by those individuals or organizations.”

Which makes perfect sense, I guess. But it begs the question: In what sense is Grammarly providing “expert review”? Maybe not at all, as historian CE Aubin told Wired: “These are not expert reviews, because there are no ‘experts’ involved in the creation.”
