Google has expanded access to Canvas in AI Mode to all US users in English, after all first release feature as part of its Google Labs experiments last year.
Canvas in AI Mode is designed to help users plan and organize projects or research in depth. The display now supports the ability to document or create Google Search-style tools, the company said in a blog post.
Google has previously reported using Canvas for things like creating a learning guide for uploading class notes and more; This feature can also complete other tasks such as turning a research report into a web page, questionnaire, or audio presentation, which integrates with the Google Notebook LM research tool.
Users can describe an idea to Canvas and watch it generate code to turn that idea into a shared app or game. This section can also be used to help organize technical documentation and get feedback on projects.
Canvas is already available in Gemini, where subscribers of Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra can access the latest model, Gemini 3, with a large window of 1 million symbols for the most complex projects.
More people will be exposed to Canvas now that it’s available to all users in the US through Google’s AI search engine known as AI Mode, including those who haven’t had a go at Gemini’s capabilities. This is one of Google’s advantages over the AI ​​competition – the reach of Google Search gives it the power to put its products in front of billions of users.
To use Canvas, users select the new Canvas option from the toolbar (+) while in AI Mode, then specify what they want to create. This opens a Canvas side panel where users can gather information from the web and Google’s Knowledge Graph. If they create a prototype or application, users can test the functionality, edit it to view the underlying code, and change the way the application works by interacting with Gemini.
Canvas competes with similar tools from competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic. However, The ChatGPT Canvas template starts automatically depending on the query, while Google and Anthropic for Claude need a direct connection. Both also allow users to get help writing or turning ideas into projects.
