General Motors is shaking up where its cars are made to shift production from China and Mexico to a US factory in Kansas. The change will also mean the end of the relaunched Chevrolet Bolt EV, the only vehicle built at the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas.
The industry’s musical chairs reflect the economic and political environment, shaped by Trump’s pricing policy and his decision to end the EV tax credit, which provided up to $7,500 for eligible electric vehicles. These changes have made it more expensive to make cars in China and Mexico that are sold in the United States.
Production of the 2027 Chevy Bolt EV, which hit dealerships this month, is expected to last about a year and a half. The new Chevy Bolt EV, priced at $29,990 including destination charge, is one of the most affordable new EVs available to US consumers.
GM confirmed to TechCrunch that the next-generation Buick Envision, which was built in China, will move to the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas, starting in 2028. The gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox, which is produced in San Luis Potosà in Mexico, will move to the Kansas factory in mid-2027.
The Bolt, meanwhile, will have a short life if GM follows through on its previously announced plans.
“When we unveiled the Bolt in October, we said and it was said that it would be a limited edition model,” GM said in a statement sent to TechCrunch. “We previously announced that the gas-powered Equinox will be coming to Fairfax in mid-2027 as Bolt production winds down. Today we’re announcing the next-generation Buick compact SUV will be coming to Fairfax beginning in 2028.”
The company still sells other EVs, including the electric Chevy Equinox and the Chevy Blazer. The question is whether GM will change and keep the Bolt if sales are better than expected. We know that GM has pledged to make future investments in Fairfax Assembly for the next generation of affordable EVs. We don’t know when.
