An explosion occurred at a mosque in Nigeria’s Borno state, causing many casualties.
Witnesses said the explosion at the Gamboru market in Maiduguri, the state capital, occurred during evening prayers. One report said seven people died, but there was no official confirmation of any casualties.
Unconfirmed videos on social media appeared to show the aftermath of the explosion, with people standing in the market area and dust particles filling the air.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but militants have previously targeted mosques and crowded places in the area with suicide and improvised explosive device (IED) attacks.
Maiduguri has been at the heart of the insurgency in the West Africa Province of the radical Islamist group Boko Haram and its offshoot Islamic State.
Boko Haram began military operations in 2009 to establish an Islamic caliphate in Borno state.
Security measures targeting the group have failed to prevent sporadic attacks targeting civilians in northeastern Nigeria.
