Elon Musk recently outlined the main goals of the chip-building partnership between his companies Tesla and SpaceX.
Bloomberg reports Musk shared his plans on Saturday night at an event in Austin, Texas, with a photo showing what Musk calls “Terafab” being built near Tesla’s headquarters in Austin and a “gigafactory”.
Musk said he’s pursuing the project because semiconductor manufacturers aren’t making chips fast enough to meet his company’s artificial intelligence: “We build Terafab or we don’t have chips, and we need chips, so we build Terafab.”
The goal is to create chips that can support 100 to 200 gigawatts of the world’s computing power annually, and terawatt in spacesaid Musk. He did not give a timeline for these plans.
As Bloomberg pointed out, Musk doesn’t have a background in semiconductor manufacturing, but he does have a history. overpromise on goals and time.
