Disabled Texas woman held hostage by husband for five years


Police have arrested a Texas man who allegedly held his disabled wife captive for five years and gave her little food – until she managed to call 911 for help.

James Earl JohnsonThe 46-year-old is now charged with injury to a disabled person and abandonment or endangerment of a disabled person after investigators say he locked his wife in a bedroom in their Houston home for five years.

Harris County prosecutors claimed Johnson’s wife had not received any medical care in years. She was also prohibited from having any contact with the outside world, investigators said.

Police did not provide the name or age of the victim, who was held in a bedroom in the couple’s $1 million, 6,783-square-foot mansion.

Police said Johnson controlled every aspect of his wife’s life and often restricted her diet to one egg a day.

Johnson allegedly left home on Friday, March 6, but forgot to take his phone with him, and his wife did not miss the opportunity.

She called 911, but the call was interrupted when Johnson returned to answer the call, realized what she had done and slapped his wife.

Police said they traced the call and sent officers to Johnson’s home to check on the caller.

Police said the wife is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. Police did not disclose the nature of the victim’s disability.

Johnson, a master electrician, was released from jail on $50,000 bail, according to online records.

The judge banned him from contacting his wife or returning home until the case was resolved.

If Johnson is convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

It was unclear whether he would plead to the charges or be represented by an attorney.

Attempts to reach Johnson by phone on Wednesday, March 11, were unsuccessful. US Weekly An email was also sent to Johnson but did not receive a reply.

The wife had previously tried to get the police involved.

A Utah man was arrested after he heard a woman screaming inside his apartment, and police eventually found her covered in blood and yelling for help, according to authorities. Demian Edgar Austin Robbins, 55, was taken into custody Wednesday, Jan. 28, on charges of kidnapping and aggravated assault, Salt reported.

Police were called to the couple’s home in early November, but the wife said she was told at the time not to talk to them.

Court documents show the officers failed to file reports on their visits.

Court records further indicate that the victim filed child support lawsuits against Johnson in Family Court in 2001 and 2002. However, as family court records, the documents remain under court seal.
