Just before the new Super Bowl commercial, Crypto.com founder Kris Marszalek has bought the most valuable domain in history, buying AI.com for $70 million, according to the Financial Times. The deal, which is paid entirely in cryptocurrency to an anonymous seller, breaks the record. (Broker Larry Fischer, who helped sell it, is celebrating his good luck.)
Marszalek plans to roll out the site for Sunday’s big game, offering consumers its AI-powered messaging, app, and stock trading platform. “If you take the long term – 10 to 20 years – (AI) will be one of the biggest waves of technology in our lifetime,” he told the FT.
The purchase also marks a record for the books – not the crypto industry that is known for its strictness when it comes to spending money. Previously, CarInsurance.com had the crown at $49.7 million (2010), followed by VacationRentals.com ($35 million in 2007) and Voice.com ($30 million in 2019). Other leading businesses include PrivateJet.com ($30 million), 360.com ($17 million), and Sex.com, which has doubled its sales to $13 million each time, despite its second owner. they got confused trying to monetize it.
“With a property like AI.com, there are no substitutes,” Fischer told the FT. “When one is found, the opportunity will not present itself again.”
Whether mega-dollar areas bring returns is an open question. But for Mr. Marszalek, who already owns Crypto.com and threw $700 million into the naming rights of the stadium, having two areas that define the teams seems to be the right fit.
