Building in regulated industries adds a huge hurdle to the already difficult journey of building startups. And this week Build Mode, The First Battle editor Isabelle Johannessen spoke to two startups who are working to advance in an industry poised for disruption, even though the topic of regulation may deter many.
In this episode, we talk about life and death and how regulatory approval should not interfere with technology but will prolong time and require careful planning from the jump.
Isabelle first contacted Gabriel Sanchez, CEO and co-founder Enspectra Health. The company has developed a device that aims to eliminate the need for dermatologist skin biopsies. Sanchez breaks down his ten-year journey to get FDA approval. In both interviews, Sanchez offers sage advice to everyone during his long management tenure and explains how he’s helped his company thrive and his team motivated despite the odds.
Next, Isabelle talks to Tom Harries, co-founder Funeral of the Earththe beginning of the end of life that has created a new process that turns human remains into dirt. Harries didn’t have to lead his team through the lengthy FDA approval process (because the FDA is primarily concerned with living things), but his company has faced its own legal challenges. Earth Funeral was founded at a time when its alternative was legal in one state. And while its development process doesn’t depend on approval or approval by a government agency, it does depend on lawmakers and voters who may be upset about a new way to accommodate their loved one.
