Coursera and Udemy he announced Wednesday’s joint venture is valued at approximately $2.5 billion, bringing together two of the biggest names in online learning.
Coursera has acquired Udemy in both cases, marking a significant moment in online education. The companies said the merger would be completed in the second half of next year, pending review and shareholder approval.
The deal comes at a difficult time for both Udemy and Coursera, as each faces market headwinds. Although both companies are posting revenue growth in the the third part of 2025, their share prices fell, which proves that investors lack confidence in the platforms.
Like a a joint ventureUdemy and Coursera aimed to convince shareholders, and demonstrate that the combined strengths of both platforms can deliver immediate profits and long-term growth potential.
“Through this merger with Coursera, we will create benefits for our students, business customers, and educators, while delivering greater value to our shareholders, who will participate in the growth of the combined company,” Udemy CEO Hugo Sarrazin said in a statement.
In addition, as the online learning market continues to expand — especially with the introduction of AI — Sarrazin said the merger will accelerate plans to introduce AI-powered products.
Coursera announced recently including and OpenAI’s ChatGPT app ecosystem and a content agreement and Anthropic. Wednesday’s announcement also comes just two days after Udemy he rolled over The new “AI-powered microlearning”, which aims to provide students with shorter lessons, suited to their busy schedules.

The companies also believe that the merger will help them deal with how AI is changing the workplace, as AI knowledge is essential for many employees. The list of jobs that require AI skills has increased over the past few years, and according to another studyone in three hiring managers would not consider a candidate without them.
