Comedian Bowen Yang is leaving the cast of “Saturday Night Live” and will no longer appear on the long-running sketch show after its latest episode airs.
In a post on Instagram, Young declined to reveal the reason for his mid-season departure but said he was “grateful for every minute I was there.”
“I love working on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and most of all I love the people here,” Young wrote. She started working as a writer on the NBC show in 2018 and later joined the cast.
The 35-year-old Yang is the first Chinese-American actor in the history of “Saturday Night Live” and has become one of the most famous actors on “Saturday Night Live” in recent years.
In his Instagram post, Young described the lessons he learned while working on “Saturday Night Live.”
“I learned about myself (bad wigs). I learned about other people (generosity, vulnerability, passion),” he wrote.
“I learned that human error can only be right. I learned that comedy is mostly about logistics, and it usually fails until it doesn’t, which is the best.”
He also thanked his fellow cast members and the show’s longtime producer Lorne Michaels.
Young was behind some of the show’s most memorable characters and parodies, including the iceberg that sank the Titanic and disgraced former congressman Jorge Santos.
Young’s final episode will air Saturday night and will be hosted by Ariana Grande, one of the stars of the movie “Evil: Forever.”
Young also had a role in the film and starred in previous films including “The Wedding Party,” “Fire Island,” “Brothers” and the first “Wicked” movie.
He was nominated for five Emmy Awards for his work on “Saturday Night Live.” He also co-hosts the podcast Las Culturistas and is expected to voice a character in the animated film The Cat in the Hat, due out next year.
