The company is adding support for vertical tabs along with a refreshing version of Reading Mode, its distraction-free, text-based reading experience.

Updates show how greater competition from modern browsers it has affected the development of Chrome, as well as hindering the attractiveness of competitors to differentiate their browsers with features that Chrome does not have.

The company notes that the new vertical tabs can be enabled at any time by right-clicking on a Chrome window and selecting “Show Tabs Vertically.” The company says there is no hard limit on the number of tabs that can be opened (beyond what would be limited by the user’s device). Vertical tabs work like horizontal tabs, meaning you can have Chrome windows with tabs or groups of them.

People who prefer vertical tabs are power users or researchers who always have many tabs open in their browser and often have trouble finding the right tabs when things get busy. This is especially true if you tend to open multiple tabs from the same page, with the same favicon.

This is not the first time that Google has tried to put tabs on the side of the browser. The company tried the look ten years agobut it was not developed from beta. But this time, development has happened he went forwardand savvy users are already done lighting the way by supporting flags in the latest builds of Chrome. Apparently, Google’s decision to move forward was influenced by the interest of other browsers, such as Arc and others from AI developers, who hope to persuade Chrome users to switch.
