Christina Applegate reveals she had an abortion at 19 in new book

“In late April 1991, I became pregnant. I wanted to move away from what had happened, but it was all documented in my diary,” Applegate, 54, wrote in the book, which was released on Tuesday, March 3. “There are moments in my life that are too painful to force narrative or make meaning, so I’ll let my voice at the time speak for itself.”

In this memoir, Applegate includes entries from her journals throughout her life. In 1991, she wrote that “so many emotions filled my soul” about her pregnancy.

“I always felt that if I got pregnant knowing the time was not right, there would be no problem with an abortion,” she wrote, noting that the fetus was “incredible” and made her feel “safe.”

Applegate was in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend at the time. His name is not mentioned in The Truth.

“I don’t really understand my relationship anymore. It’s not okay,” she wrote in her diary. “Sometimes I feel like it’s not worth it.”

One day after she found out she was pregnant, Applegate recalled how things took a “cruel turn.” She decided to have an abortion.

“I’m fucking pregnant and I’m going to kill my baby on Thursday. I’m wondering where the hell I’m going to go to recover from the murder,” she wrote. Applegate claimed her boyfriend’s family would “hate” her when they found out. The actress explained that now is not the right time for her to become a mother.

“I feel fine. Just a little dizzy. It doesn’t give me time to realize what I’ve done,” she wrote. “This is probably the best yet.”

Throughout her memoir, Applegate chronicles her rocky experiences. Experience with an abusive boyfriend. Applegate is honest when she talks about how often she goes back — even though she knows the situation is dire.

One Christmas, Applegate took her now-ex to her grandmother’s house in Indiana. When things obviously got physical, her mom, Nancy Priddystop it. Applegate recalled calling him a “jerk” before he pulled her out of the bathroom.

“He barged in, grabbed me by the neck and dragged me by my legs through the hallway and back to the bedroom where the lights were still on,” she wrote. “He pushed me down on the bed, with my pants still around my ankles. His face was livid, completely immersed in anger, he was shaking with anger, panting, foaming at the mouth, as if his life was on the line.”

Her family were “horrified” and called the police. Applegate did not press charges and her boyfriend was taken to a motel. She went with him, much to her mother’s dismay. The situation is said to have escalated again.

“I heard him banging on the mirror and heard the glass shattering. I watched him pull out a shard,” Applegate recalled. “I felt something cold on my neck.”

Applegate wrote that she was “calm” throughout the situation. The boyfriend allegedly asked her to take off her clothes and “ride him.” He didn’t do anything but let her go.

“He seemed to take pleasure in making me truly believe that he was going to kill me,” Applegate speculates in the book. “The fear that filled me seemed to satisfy him.”

While they were together, one last thing happened that led to the end of their relationship. During one fight, he poured “an entire bottle of tequila” down her throat. Prior to her “severe alcohol poisoning,” Applegate called her recently hired bodyguard.

“He found my boyfriend sitting on the couch acting like nothing had happened while I was nearly unconscious, sputtering and incoherent,” she wrote. “Every breath I took was apparently an eternity apart, he told me later.”

After the breakup, Applegate went through several more relationships, some of which are detailed in the book. She married her current husband Martin Lenoble 2013. They have a 15-year-old daughter, Sadie.
