“We are heartbroken when our beautiful baby girl Amani Joy passed away on Monday morning. She was the best blessing we could have ever asked for and her joyful spirit made us laugh,” Ward wrote on Instagram. “She taught us about patience, trust and a positive outlook on life. She showed us true strength and bravery. She overcame adversity at a young age, was always happy and lit up every room with her smile.”

He continued: “Having the privilege of being her parents and seeing the world through her eyes has made us all better. She will always be daddy’s best friend and mommy’s little girl. We will miss you forever and love you forever, Amani Joy.”

Ward and his partner, Monica Cookwelcoming Armani in November 2022. Although they never announced an official cause of death, Armani battled heart disease throughout his life. Ward has been open about her health challenges, announcing she was diagnosed with Down syndrome when she underwent heart surgery.

Despite her struggles, Ward called Armani “the happiest child I have ever seen” in a March 2024 Instagram post celebrating World Down Syndrome Day.

Ward is an eight-year NFL veteran who left the 49ers to join the Colts in the offseason. Before making his free-agent decision, he acknowledged the trauma he and Cook endured may have left him More likely to leave California.

“It just brings back bad memories,” Ward continued. “Every time I get on a plane back here in San Jose, California, it’s a terrible memory. I go through this alone every night because my daughter doesn’t want to go back to California because of what happened.”

He added that the trauma had an impact on his body.

“I suffer from PTSD a lot,” Ward said. “I’m always throwing up, waking up in the middle of the night, sweating, stuff like that. It’s hard, it’s hard. But, you know, we’ll see how things go. It’s going to be fun for sure.”
