small disaster Taking the audience on a crazy journey This involved screen changes for multiple books before it was revealed who was responsible for Bessie’s shocking fall.
based on Sarah Vaughnnovel of the same name, small disasterwhich premieres on Paramount+ on Thursday, December 11, follows accident and ER doctor Liz (Yeah Joyner) Treating the unexplained head injury of one of her best friends’ children: Jesse (Diane Kruger). She then had to face the dilemma of whether to report the incident to children’s social services.
The ending reveals that Bessie’s head injury was not caused by Jesse. This is Mel’s husband Rob (Stephen Campbell Moore), who was at home when the baby fell, scaring Jesse’s son Frankie So as not to reveal it to others.
“The book and the show have changed a lot, and in the process of making the show, it’s really a completely different entity. That means people can still read the book and enjoy and discover different things,” Joyner exclusively said US Weekly About joining the project in a leadership role. “In Liz’s case, there’s not that much depth on screen. For me, having the book and knowing the depth was very valuable.”
Joyner is grateful to her There are novels as reference.
“I felt really grounded because I knew Liz so well from the books. I didn’t feel like anything in the show was a diversion from the character. I really fell in love with Liz in the books,” she recalled. “She had no time for herself, no time to eat well, no time to take care of herself. She was really at the bottom of her list, and I think that’s the case with a lot of working women that I really identify with. So, I knew I wanted people to feel like they really felt like they could trust Liz, and that they could see a reflection of themselves in Liz.”

Getting to know this character deeply is all about the details. “I wanted her to feel like she was simply unattainable and that she was, in fact, someone or something that reminded the audience of themselves,” she added. “Hopefully they have compassion for her and therefore have a little more compassion for themselves. I’m trying to find moments where I can incorporate that compassion into it.”
Joyner also has a personal connection to hospital staff.
“I personally had a surgery a few days before we started filming that I never mentioned to anyone. I didn’t want anyone to worry. It was a minor emergency surgery that I wasn’t expecting. I went in on Saturday morning and flew out on Monday,” she recalled. “It’s about finding those moments that really feel like Liz in the novel. Even if they’re small moments, putting them into the show because they can’t be put into words. You have to be immersed in the story and the main plot of things. My job was to try to find those elements that really grounded and grounded me and kept Liz real.”
While reflecting on the message behind the show, Joyner shared her hopes Audiences disappeared from the series.
“I hope they can be a little more kind to themselves and other mothers. Understand that we’re all going through something. Of course, in the early days, you’re exhausted and no one can think straight and no one can bring out their best self. There’s this lovely friendship and relationship between all the women. Ultimately, they know better than anyone else,” she told us. “You find your people and you really appreciate them. I hope people come out of this with a little more understanding of the stress that young mothers and new mothers are under and a little more kindness to themselves and those around them.”
