NFL defensive lineman Cam Heyward He’s become one of the league’s most respected leaders over his 15-year career, but this season he’s able to share some of that responsibility with the team’s new future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Heyward, 36, has spent his entire career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and helped 42-year-old Rodgers join the team last offseason.
“I love having him here because now he’s an old guy,” Hayward said exclusively US Weekly Rodgers signed a one-year contract with Pittsburgh in June. “You can have that cape.”
As Rodgers considers where he’ll sign this summer, Hayward stirred up some controversy when he spoke to us on his phone. Partnering with AstraZeneca and the “Asthma Bad Behavior” campaign, which bluntly addressed the long-term search for quarterback.

“You either want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don’t,” Heyward said on his “More Than Football” podcast in March. “It’s that simple. This is the ballpark.”
However, since Rodgers officially signed with the Steelers, Heyward said it’s all just a bridge matter.
“When someone joins your team, you just want to welcome them with a welcoming arm,” Hayward told us. “I think that’s all we do.”
He added: “I’ve always tried to treat every teammate with respect and always made sure I was there to help all my teammates. We’re all in different stages of our lives throughout the year, but we all just want to be there for each other.”
It’s been a rollercoaster season for the Steelers, who are currently 6-6 and have lost three of their last four games. Still, Pittsburgh is tied with the Baltimore Ravens for first place in the AFC North.
“We just had a tough loss to the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 30,” Hayward said. “We didn’t get the job done. I think we’ve got to get hot down the stretch. We’ve got to get hot the last five games and I think that’s going to push us into the playoffs.”
The Steelers have a key game against the Ravens in Baltimore on Sunday, Dec. 7 before their schedule concludes with games against the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns and a Week 18 showdown with the Ravens in Pittsburgh.
“As crazy as it is, I think the playoffs are just for more fireworks,” Hayward added. “Hopefully we’ll be playing our best ball by then.”
Hayward, who has had asthma since he was a child, discussed being proactive about his health over the years as a key to his success.
“I’ve had asthma since I was about six years old,” Hayward explained. “I have weather-, allergy- and exercise-induced asthma. Working with doctors, coaches, and my mom has played a key role in my life. You know, listening to my body and how to manage my asthma. Not pushing too hard. My mom’s favorite saying growing up was, ‘Don’t be the hero.'”
The Steelers star continued, “But I can be very stubborn at times. I suffer the consequences and sometimes end up in the hospital for it. I carry an inhaler all the time. When I feel sick or unwell, I use a nebulizer. That makes me want to share my story.”
