Bitfinex hacker Ilya Lichtenstein congratulates Trump on his early release from prison


Ilya Lichtenstein, who pleaded guilty to money laundering related to his role in the major hacking of the crypto exchange Bitfinex, has apparently been released immediately from prison.

In a Thursday evening by writing on XLichtenstein said he got out early “thanks to President Trump’s First Step Act” (the prison reform bill was passed during Trump’s first term).

“I remain committed to taking action on cybersecurity as quickly as possible,” Lichtenstein said. “To the supporters, thank you for everything. To the haters, I look forward to proving you wrong.”

Department of Justice captured Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan in 2022 and recovered 3.6 billion bitcoins that were stolen from Bitfinex. The two became famous after their arrest and were featured in a Netflix film titled “The Fastest Speed.”

Lichtenstein eventually admitted that he was involved in the hack and was he was sentenced to five years in prison.

It is unclear whether the Trump administration took any direct action on the release. Chief executive officer he told CNBC Lichtenstein “has served time on his sentence and is currently under house arrest in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Bureau of Prisons.”
