Drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as “El Mencho,” died shortly after being captured in a bloody firefight in Jalisco state, as one of Mexico’s most powerful and feared criminal organizations unleashed a wave of violence across 20 Mexican states.
Members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) have turned many of the towns where the cartel is active into war zones.
BBC International correspondent Quentin Sommerville travels to Culiacán in the northern state of Sinaloa, another Mexican drug cartel hotspot where cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada is currently serving a sentence in a US prison since the 2024 ouster.
The BBC followed two paramedics in Culiacán, Julio César Vega and Héctor Torres, who cared for victims after the violence. Hector said violence in Culiacan has never been so severe or lasted so long.
